What can you do for your upcoming anaesthetic?
Please make sure that your health is as good as it can be at the time of surgery. Consider losing weight, have regular check ups with your GP and keep fit! In order to provide you with the safest anaesthetic possible, it is important to know about you and your health well in advance of the day of your procedure. You can help by filling out a Pre-Operative Questionnaire. This information is only seen by Dr Irina Hollington and is deleted after your procedure (Privacy Policy is available on request).

Fasting
This is very important prior to your anaesthetic to keep you safe from aspirating stomach contents into your lungs. Fasting includes not eating and not chewing gum or eating sweets, and not drinking coffee, tea, milk, juices and carbonated drinks for 6h beforehand. The only exception to this is small amounts of water to assist with taking tablets unless specified otherwise.

Medication
Most regular medication should be taken right up until your surgery. Please let me know if you take Insulin, Warfarin, or Clopidrogel, or any other blood-thinning medications.
Aspirin - Your surgeon will advise you whether to stop this. It can be continued for many types of surgery.
Oral Diabetic medication (such as Metformin, Diabex, Glibenclamide) - Please do not take these on the morning of surgery.

Fees

Dr Hollington charges fees as set out by Medicare. This takes into account many factors including pre-operative consultation, the type of surgery, time taken, special monitoring, local anaesthetic nerve blocks, patient health factors, age, emergency or elective surgery. For each procedure a specific number of ‘units’ are generated and a fee determined. For many procedures it is possible to give an estimate, however the final fee may vary if the time taken or type of surgery or other factors change.

Rebates - Medicare, Health Funds and Gap Payments

In most instances the Medicare rebate and health fund rebate will cover the entire fee. In some cases there will be a gap which is your personal responsibility to pay. In many instances your health fund will be billed directly and the health fund will pay Dr Hollington both the Medicare portion and the private health fund rebate. In these cases if there is a gap owing, you will be sent an account for this amount.

After your surgery
Your participation in a voluntary anonymous Patient Experience Survey will help greatly in improving patient care in the future. All feedback is welcome.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of your anaesthetic, or if you have any questions either prior to or after your operation, please do not hesitate to contact Dr Hollington on [email protected].
