I am Dr Indra Kumarasena, Specialist Anaesthetist with over 15 years of experience in Anaesthesia. I work at the Royal Darwin Hospital and the Darwin Private Hospital. My qualifications include MBBS, MD in anaesthesia and critical care and FANZCA. I am a fellow of the Australia and New Zealand college of anaesthetists.

My patients don't have to see me before the day of the operation, unless they have a major medical problem. Please fill out the online questionnaire so that I will contact you if a pre operative consultation is required. Please include your mobile phone number, e mail and your postal address if it's different from your home address.

Anaesthesia is very safe. About 1 out of 3 patients can get a sore throat, nausea and vomiting after surgery. Other complications like allergic reactions, dental damage, nerve damage, cardiac, lung complications, awareness, stroke and aspiration of stomach contents are extremely rare. You should not drive, operate machinery or sign legal documents and should have someone with you for 24 hours after anaesthesia.

You need to fast 6 hours before your operation, and can drink water up to 2 hours before the surgery. I will call or text you one or two days before your surgery to let you know the exact fasting time and answer your other questions if you have any.

Anaesthetist's fees are charged separately from the hospital charges. Some operations have Gap (out of pocket) payments. My anaesthetic fees are about 40-50 % less than fees suggested by the Australian Medical Association and the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. I need your details to accurately calculate the Gap payment. I will SMS the Gap amount to your mobile phone once I get the questionnaire.

My billing company is Collective anaesthetic group. They will contact you after the surgery with an invoice. You will get a 10% discount for payment before or within 7 days of the surgery. Their contact number is 0402745028.
