Dr Dev Jayram

NSW - Sydney Specialist Anaesthetist (MBBS(UNSW) FANZCA)

Preparation and experience is the key to a safe anaesthetic.

Hi my name is Dr Dev Jayram MBBS(UNSW) FANZCA and I will be your Anaesthetist for your upcoming surgery.

About Me
I am an Australian medical graduate having attained my medical degree from the University of New South Wales and gained my specialist qualifications from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. I have been practicing as a doctor for over 13 years to date, and currently have appointments in major tertiary hospitals in the state as well as several large private hospitals. My areas of interest include anaesthesia for complex spine surgery, major burn injuries, orthopaedics and neurophysiological monitoring of the spinal cord.

The wealth of experience derived from the complexity of patients treated whilst working at large tertiary hospitals, has shaped my current practice and continues to contribute to my ongoing professional development, in this critical care specialty.

As a Specialist Anaesthetist my role is to care for you during your surgery. This involves continuous monitoring of important vital signs you commonly know, such as blood pressure and heart rate, in addition to looking at a continuous electrocardiogram trace, oxygen saturations and carbon dioxide levels to name a few. In addition we are there in case something goes wrong. As an Anaesthetist, we manage critical events during surgery and also derive a lot of our crisis handling skills from playing a pivotal role within the hospital setting in managing acutely unwell and trauma patients. What this means at the end of the day, is that I have the experience and skills necessary to look after you during your surgery and ensure you are safe.

What do you need to do?
As every patient is unique I need you to fill out the pre operative questionnaire so that I can determine if further tests or medications are required prior to surgery, choose the most suitable anaesthetic for your surgery and also plan for your post operative care. Please note that all information given to me on the questionnaire is encrypted and deleted after being sent to me.

Fasting is extremely important prior to surgery. This is to minimise the risk of reflux of food into your airway while anaesthetised. I require a minimum of 6 hours of fasting to solids prior to your admission time, unless I inform you otherwise. You can have your regular medications with a small sip of water during the fasting period.

Please also bring your relevant x-rays/CT scans/MRI to surgery. Your surgeon may not always have them, and failure to have these available, may delay your surgery.

All feedback welcome
After your procedure I would appreciate you taking just a few minutes to fill out the Patient Experience Survey. Your answers are completely anonymous and will help me greatly in improving the way I care for patients in the future.

In closing, I look forward to meeting you and if you have any further questions look at my FAQ or please contact me by email or phone.

Kind Regards
